Yard work

A dumpster for yard waste and landscaping

A fence line of honeysuckle, a fallen limb, an overgrown bed you're finally redoing. Brush is light but springy, so it fills a container faster than you'd think.

First, what the city already takes

  • Small twigs, leaves and grass, bagged and inside your trash cart with the lid closed.
  • In leaf collection season, up to 40 bags of leaves a week with regular trash.
  • Limbs bundled about three feet across and three feet long, counted as one of your two monthly heavy trash items.
  • Bags of leaves at the Citizens' Transfer Station on Saturdays.

All four come from the city's Trash 101 page, which also lists composting sites that take brush and logs for a fee. If your pile is bigger than a few bundles, that's where a dumpster comes in.

Brush, stumps and sod are three different loads

Branches and shrubs are light: a 15 or 20-yard container holds a big clearing. Cut limbs short and lay them in one direction so they pack instead of tangling.

Stumps and root balls carry soil and weigh a lot for their size. Sod and topsoil are heavy debris, closer to dirt than to yard waste, and belong in a small container (see concrete and dirt).

Some companies want green waste kept separate from household trash so it can be composted. Ask before you mix in the old patio furniture.

Lawn placement

It's tempting to set the container on the grass next to the work. A loaded roll-off and the truck that lifts it can rut a lawn and crack a sprinkler line. A paved driveway, on plywood, is the safer spot even if it means more trips with the wheelbarrow.

Yard waste questions

Can I put a whole tree in?

Cut to length, the branches are fine. Large trunk sections and stumps are heavy; tell the company what you have.

Can I burn brush instead?

Check local burn rules before you do. A container avoids the question.

Talk to a local dumpster company

Have your address, the project and a rough start date handy. The company will suggest a size and tell you the price, the weight allowance and when it can bring the container.
