Which size for which space
A packed one-car garage or a single unfinished basement room usually fits in a 10 or 15-yard container. A two-car garage, or a basement plus attic, tends to need a 20. Furniture eats space fast because of the air around it, so take apart what you can: legs off tables, shelves out of bookcases, sofas cut down if you have the tools.
Household clutter is light for its bulk, so weight is seldom the problem here. Volume is.
Sort before the truck arrives
Pull out the hazards
Paint, stain, pool chemicals, old fuel and batteries can't go in. Box them for ToxDrop if you live in Marion County.
Set aside electronics

Keep, donate, toss
Three piles in the driveway. Load the toss pile last-in so the container stays tidy.

A freezer with refrigerant or a pile of old tires needs its own plan. Ask the company before it goes in.
When the curb is enough
If the cleanout turns out to be a couch and a mattress, you may not need a dumpster at all. Indianapolis heavy trash takes up to two bulky items a month on your heavy trash day, set next to the cart. The Citizens' Transfer Station at 2324 S. Belmont Ave takes extra household and heavy trash by car or pickup on Saturdays, cash only (details on Trash 101).
Once you're past a carload or two, a container saves the Saturdays.
