Shingles

Dumpsters for a roof tear-off

Asphalt shingles look like a modest pile and weigh like a truckload of gravel. The weight allowance, not the volume, decides the container.

Count the layers before you call

Go into the attic or look at the edge of the roof. A single layer of shingles is one thing; two or three layers, which older Indianapolis houses sometimes have, multiplies the weight. Have the roof's size in squares if a roofer gave you one, or the house's footprint if not.

With that, the company can tell you whether one container covers the job or whether it's better to fill a small one, have it swapped and fill another. Ask how a swap is priced.

Is your roofer hauling it?

Many roofing contracts include debris removal. Read yours before you rent. A container of your own makes sense when you're doing the tear-off yourself, or when the roofer's price assumes you supply one.

Shingle loads: in and out

Usually fine

  • Asphalt shingles
  • Felt or synthetic underlayment
  • Drip edge and flashing
  • Rotted decking boards

Ask first or keep out

  • Tar buckets with liquid left in them
  • Old roofing cement and sealants
  • Satellite dishes and electronics
  • Anything that might be asbestos siding or felt on a very old house

Placing it under the eaves

Shingles get thrown or chuted straight off the roof, so the container goes as close to the drip line as the truck allows, on plywood. Keep it clear of the gas meter, the AC unit and landscape beds, which take a beating from falling debris.

Nails scatter. Run a magnetic sweeper over the driveway and lawn before the container leaves, while you still know where the edges were.

Roofing questions

Can roofing debris share a container with other trash?

Usually yes, but every extra item eats the weight allowance the shingles need.

What if it rains on the shingles?

Wet debris weighs more at the scale. Cover the container if rain is coming.

Talk to a local dumpster company

Have your address, the project and a rough start date handy. The company will suggest a size and tell you the price, the weight allowance and when it can bring the container.
