Dumpster permits in Indianapolis
Put the container on your own driveway and the city usually stays out of it. Put it on the street, in the alley or across the sidewalk and you need permission first.

What the city says
Indianapolis requires a permit, and sometimes an inspection, for any use or restriction of the public right-of-way. The city defines that as streets, alleys and sidewalk areas. Permits are handled by the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (right-of-way page).
A roll-off parked in the street or blocking a sidewalk uses that space, so plan on a permit before it arrives. If you're considering the grass strip between the sidewalk and the curb, ask the city before treating it as yours.
Who usually applies
Some dumpster companies apply for street permits as part of the job and add the fee to the bill. Others expect the homeowner to do it. Ask on the call, and if it's on you, apply before you lock in the delivery date.
The permit covers dates and a location. If the project runs long, the permit may need extending along with the rental.
Not every address follows the Indianapolis rule
The city handles local streets across Marion County except those in the excluded cities, which keep their own rules.
Lawrence
Has its own right-of-way use permit in city code. Lawrence page.
Speedway
Has a town application for placing a dumpster. Speedway page.
Greenwood
Needs a written permit from the city's engineering division for equipment on a street or sidewalk. Greenwood page.
HOA rules are a separate question
A city permit doesn't override a homeowners association. Many HOAs limit how long a container can stay or where it can sit, even on a private driveway. Read the covenants or email the management company before you book.
Talk to a local dumpster company
Have your address, the project and a rough start date handy. The company will suggest a size and tell you the price, the weight allowance and when it can bring the container.
