Remodel debris

Remodel dumpsters for kitchens and bathrooms

Tear-out day fills a driveway with cabinet boxes, countertop slabs and bags of drywall. Line up the container before the first cabinet comes off the wall.

Kitchen or bath: the difference in debris

Bathroom

Small room, heavy pieces: a cast iron tub, a mortar bed under the tile, a vanity and toilet. A 10-yard container usually holds it, and weight matters more than space.

Kitchen

Bulkier and lighter: cabinets, laminate, soffits and drywall. Plan on 15 to 20 yards for one kitchen, more if walls come down.

Old houses

Plaster and lath from a pre-war home is far heavier than drywall. Tell the company if the walls are plaster.

Appliances need a separate answer

Refrigerators, freezers and window air conditioners hold refrigerant, and most dumpster companies won't take them as ordinary debris. Indianapolis heavy trash won't either; the city routes those through the Mayor's Action Center (Trash 101). A stove or water heater without refrigerant can go out as one of your two monthly heavy trash items instead.

If the store delivering your new appliances will haul the old ones, that is often the simplest route.

Set up the path before demolition

Debris travels from the room to the container dozens of times. Park the container as close to the nearest door as the truck can reach, lay cardboard or drop cloths along the floor, and take the storm door off its hinges for the week.

Keep the rear door of the container clear so a wheelbarrow can roll in. Load broken tile and mortar low and spread out, not in one corner.

Remodel questions

Can old paint cans from the remodel go in?

Not liquid paint. Take it to ToxDrop, or ask the company whether it accepts fully dried latex.

How long should I keep it?

Tear-out is usually the first few days, but trim and flooring scraps keep coming. Ask the company how extra days are billed.

Talk to a local dumpster company

Have your address, the project and a rough start date handy. The company will suggest a size and tell you the price, the weight allowance and when it can bring the container.
