Heavy debris

Concrete, dirt and brick: heavy debris dumpsters

Breaking out an old patio, a cracked walk or a brick planter fills a small container to its weight limit long before it looks full.

Three things that are different about heavy loads

Small containers

Most companies send a 10-yard box for concrete or soil, sometimes with low walls. A big container would weigh more than the truck can lift.

Fill lines

You may be told to fill only partway. Follow it; an overweight container can't be picked up.

Clean loads

Concrete or dirt with nothing mixed in can go to a recycler. Ask whether a clean load is priced differently.

Why the curb won't take it

Indianapolis heavy trash pickup does not accept construction debris, and suburban haulers draw the same line. Greenwood's curbside rules, for example, list dirt, sod, rocks, pavers, concrete and cement block as items heavy trash cannot include (Greenwood guidelines). For more than a few chunks, a container is the practical way out.

Protect the driveway

A small container full of concrete puts a lot of weight on a few points. Insist on plywood under the rails, and avoid fresh asphalt or a driveway that's already cracking. If the only access is across the lawn, talk it through with the company before the truck arrives.

Load from the back door with a wheelbarrow and a ramp board, laying pieces flat and spreading them evenly rather than piling them at one end.

Heavy debris questions

Can I mix brick and dirt?

Often yes, as long as no household trash is in it. Ask how the company classifies the load.

What about asphalt?

Tell the company. Some treat it like concrete, some want it separate.

Talk to a local dumpster company

Have your address, the project and a rough start date handy. The company will suggest a size and tell you the price, the weight allowance and when it can bring the container.
